A List of Miscellaneous Things to Consider When Working on the PharmaSim

1. Remember that each period is an entire year. Thus, many things can and will happen during that year (e.g., inflation, consumer attitudes, changes in competitors actions and success, distribution results).

2. Take notes of all decisions for each round. Then you can view all decisions when making decisions for new rounds.

3. Try to figure out strategy and tactics ahead of time, make your decisions, learn from your results, and react to them in the next period.

4. Do not buy any research reports in Period 0. This would be a waste of money since the information is the same as in the examples in the case description.

5. I recommend that you do buy a lot of research information, potentially beginning in period 1 (which is year 2). Assess each piece of information for how helpful it is (or could be), how to use this information, and how often you should buy the information.

Buy reports, in marketing, you need data to make decisions. However, it does cost money which is deducted from your budget and it is helpful if you use it in a rational manner.

6. Make a plan about what information to use and how to make various decisions. These theories, hypotheses, and rules of thumb can help you to structure a very complex task.

These theories can come from textbooks, class, your own experience, the case description

7. For each period, keep track of not only what you did but also your rationale and what you concluded from the results.

Perhaps one member of the group should be responsible for this. Adopt specific goals and monitor them to construct and flesh out a theory of what works and why. This will help you when you finish and have to re-construct all this for the Marketing Plan.

8. Note that: if sales increase beyond production capacity, you will automatically add some fixed amount of capacity that will more than cover sales.

9. Many of us have trouble remembering what type of product and what benefits are offered by each of Allstar's brands and which competitor brands do what and compete with each of Allstar's brands. I recommend that you write this out and keep it on a card or piece of paper so that you do not have to keep checking up on this as you ponder decisions.

10. DO NOT PRINT ALL REPORTS – keep one A4 paper in front of you and note of key report. Then you can open needed report on screens to get data to make deicions. You can also use an excel file to calcualte prices, sales force for each round.

11. Beware of inflation. It is high in the PharmaSim world and will impact your costs (and should affect your price).

Tip 1. Check Sales Force

Should be around 20%-35% total budget

Increase Sales force from 20% to 35% over rounds

 

Tip 2. Promo – Use strong promo

Will increase sales

Strong promo in rounds 1-2-3 about 30% of budget

Then reduce to 20%-25% in rounds 4-5-6-7 and increase strong again about 30% in rounds 8-9-10

 

Tip 3. Advertising – Use strong advertising

In early rounds, use strong advertising about 35%, then reduce gradually to 20%

 

Tip 4. Check REPORT – Manufacturer Sales

All round – 38%, Best Help: 24%

All Round Plus – 7% compete with Cough Cure 32%  and END 60%

All Right – 19% compete with DripStop 36% and Effective 44%

Check this report to find out market share of each product and also find top competitors in each segment.

 

Tip 5. Check REPORT – Price

To compare prices of each product with prices of top competitors

Increase prices to close or higher than top competitors to gain higher contribution margins

 

Tip 6. Check REPORT – Sales Channel

Allocate sales forces based on sales of each channel.

More sales force for higher sales channel.

You can use excel file to calculate sales force for each channel.

 

Tip 7. Check REPORT – Product Profile for key symptom (multi, could and nalsal)

Aches: 60%
